John Humphrys wrapped up his final Today show by admitting there’s a “lot wrong” with the BBC. The broadcaster bowed out of the BBC Radio 4 programme after 32 years and 5,000 shows. Humphrys, 76, said: “It is important that people in power should be held to account, even if just occasionally we give them a hard time”. Minutes after BBC director-general Lord Hall praised him in the studio, he said: “There’s a lot wrong with it as an organisation and it is facing massive challenges from social media and changing behaviour.” Humphrys, who will continue to host Mastermind, added: “But I believe we need the BBC as much now as we have ever done. “I simply cannot imagine this country without it. It is an unthinkable thought.” Earlier, he quizzed Lord Hall over means-testing over-75s for free TV licences. He then came close to choking up as he thanked listeners, saying: “You really are the backbone of our country. “You care about our democracy. I am more proud than I can say that you have put up with me for so long.”
